  • Erk, Dave
  • Erk used crampons for the ascent again.
  • Dave had enough traction without.
  • The Beaver Brook Shleter now seems to be 1.5 miles from Hwy 112 after the cascades (not before).
  • From the shelter on up, snowshoes were helpful.
  • The trail has been re-routed climbing higher on Mt Blue, then crossing the saddle farther west and meeting the Benton Brook Trail.
  • The summit was covered with at least and inch of ice.
  • After the wind blew us across the slope on snowshoes, we switched to crampons.
  • The wind was probably blowing 35 or 40 mph.
  • I would guess the temperature was around 10F.
  • Erk needs better mittens and a shell to cover them.
  • I need anti-fog something for my sunglasses (and goggles).
  • I practiced my tele stance sliding down the trail on snowshoes :)

  • J, Dave
  • *Lots* less snow snow
  • Everything was pretty well packed out, just a few inches of fresh snow.
  • The climb was still pretty dry, but there was little more ice this time.
  • Although we carried gear and we knew better, we did the whole climb unroped.
  • The hike out was much shorter this time too, maybe they re-routed the trail since the last time I hiked it.

  • Gary, Dave
  • It must have been at least 60F, and sunny, no wind.
  • Until we hit the steeper part of Hancock, the trail was very well packed.
  • We did use snowshoes crossing the saddle between the peaks.
  • The snow was over our heads in places crossing the saddle.
  • There were some low trees to dodge under, but not too many.
  • Does this really count as a winter ascent?

  • Greg, Dave
  • *Lots* of snow
  • we met two guys on their way out that had been kind enough to break out the first half of the hike up to Shoestring Gully
  • The snow below was thigh to waist (mostly)
  • Above the climb it was waist to neck.
  • The climb itself was really dry. Rather than lots of pitches of ice, we had about 5 little steps of ice.
  • The chockstone gully finish looked great.
  • The hike on the ridge was about 8" loose powder with really deep drifts on the ridge.
  • Next time we try to hike the ridge, I want snowshoes and poles.
  • Excellent start to the climbing season.

Wet snowy hike.
We got bogged down on the steep uphill in the first mile. Lots of snow in the air, and the wind picked up as we turned around.
I thought it was fun.
The trail was well packed, we didn't need snowshoes.
Erk and Kim both used crampons. I didn't.
Driving 25 was ok, 118 was bad (very slippery, and now plows out yet).
Very nice parking lot though :)

Wet snowy hike.
At about 2.25 miles, you get dumped onto the ski hill, head up and to the left, eventually you will see blue blazes on your right.
For Pico, it looked like you can just head straight uphill on the ski hill.
The last 0.2 miles werw fairly steep and very iced.
Lots of rime ice too.
Too cold for the digital camera to take a summt photo.
14 F at the tope about 30 mph winds. 25 F at the trailhead.
Ski poles were very helpful, snowshoes were not necessary.
The branches weighed down with ice slowed progress.

We found a cool dead porcupine on the trail on our way down. Probably killed by a fisher cat. I'll add pictures of it later.
