  • Hard packed trail until the Willey Range Trail.
  • The trail was less broken from there on.
  • By the time we got to the steep stuff, snowshoes were very helpful.
  • From the top of Willey, the trail was unbroken.
  • We had a lot of trouble following the trail, after a couple longer side trips, we basically hiked from blaze to blaze.
  • Even blaze to blaze was challenging with the number of blow downs blocking and obscuring the trail.
  • Somewhere in the saddle between Willey and Field, after extensive searching, we couldn't find any more blazes to follow.
  • So we pulled out the map and compass, and started bush-whacking.
  • At 3:00, we decided that, with no guarantee of finding the trail on the summit of Field and no real idea of how much farther the summit was, it was time to turn around.
  • From our return time to Willey, we had to have been pretty close to the summit of Field.
  • The return trip was long, but uneventful.
